Saybolt Cleland Cocktail Table

This is a wonderful mid-century cocktail table by esteemed furniture manufacturer Saybolt Cleland. It is crafted of solid mahogany with what looks like a zebrawood trim. The finish is a deep, warm brown and shows great depth of color. The black inlay is made of wood and truly inlayed, not just glued on top like cheaper reproduction pieces do it today. It is a generously sized oval at 54"long x 36"deep x 15"high. The design is classic and has very Barbara Barry-esque feel to it.

The good news is that this piece is heavy - 35 pounds - and of excellent quality! The bad news is that it does show it's age in a couple of places. There is a repair on the base which is not that noticeable unless you turn the table over, and in no way affects the structural integrity of the piece. (see photo #6 at right) There are a lot of small scratches and flaws all over the piece, especially on the top, caused by years of use. (see photos #3 &4) However, if you are ambitious and wanted to sand the top down, you could as it is SOLID! Almost all the flaws could be eliminated as they appear to be on the surface of the wood. However, I think they add character and don't bother me. Some might even say they are "patina" and not "flaws."
